We all judge a book by its cover.
Great design sells more books.
Design and typesetting is the process of taking your typescript and ideas and turning them into a book.
Our designers are experienced in producing artwork for books of all types – from biographies and memoirs to local interest, history and reference books.
You will be in direct contact with the designer who is producing you book for you. You can liaise with them by phone, email or in person.
Designing your book – what we need from you:
Copy / typescript
The body of your book – ideally typed and supplied in a ‘digital’ form e.g. Microsoft Word file, Open Office file or PDF. This can be emailed or provided on a USB drive, etc.
Photographs / images
Any photographs or images can be emailed to us or provided on a USB drive. If you have photographs or other images in hard-copy printed form we can scan these for you and re-touch where necessary. If you require photographs but don’t have them we can assist with purchasing stock imagery for you.
Other graphic content
You can include any content in your book – drawings, plans, paintings, etc. We can produce floor plans, illustrations, etc. for you.
Don’t worry if you don’t have all the content ready now. We can start work on your book with just a sample chapter or rough copy for the cover.
Imagine the feeling of holding your very own book in your hands…

It is important to have your typescript proofread before we start design: it is much easier to correct typos, punctuation, etc. before the copy is typeset into a finished book.
It is strongly recommended that you get someone else (not you) to proofread your typescript. If necessary we can proofread your typescript, at additional cost. Please get in touch for details.
How long will it take to design my book?
The design and typesetting time for your book book varies with its length, number of images, complexity, etc. As a rough guide we aim to get a proof of the cover and a sample chapter back to you in approximately a week.
Once we’ve received your feedback and made refinements a proof of the whole book is usually completed within two weeks.
Do I need to pay a deposit for my book in advance?
No. There is nothing to pay until you are 100% happy with the finished design.
Last year First Design Print of Porlock printed my book “South Molton’s GREAT War – the story of a small community”. This was not an easy or straight forward layout in that my work consisted of many newspaper excerpts, letters, photographs and narrative but First’s artwork transformed it into an eye-catching production and the cover photograph made it into an instant bestseller. I am pleased to say that I have had two reprints so far!
I had no previous connections with the firm but was soon made to feel like an old friend. If you have a book waiting to be published, do not hesitate to go to this local firm – you will not regret it!
